
Automatic Syringe
The Ergonomics department in the Duke Health System is seeking a better way to automate the maneuver of syringes in order to decrease the number of hand injuries frequently occuring over the years. Here is how my team optimized it.
Background: As you can see in the video below, this device was created by a previous team of students that wanted to address this problem of hand injuries in the Duke Pharmacy and Cancer Center. The Ergonomics department liked the initial prototype, but they would like to improve a few components of it:
Size
Speed
Calibration protocol
Power Optimization (including easiness to charge/use)
Therefore, they approached my consulting team at the DesignHub and two of my colleagues and I were put in charge of this project. My main responsability is optimzation of its electronics, while my two teammates are responsable for the mechanical design.
